One-on-one with Sunshine

DJ / producer Sunshine has been gracing the decks of Melbourne nightclubs for years. The Revolver resident and founder of the 'Disco Faith Choir' sat down with us recently to talk about her new label, why dogs are the best and what originally inspired her to pursue a career as a DJ.

How did you become a DJ?

From the age of 14 I knew I wanted to be a DJ. I remember being on the dance floor at a rave in Perth and being blown away by the energy the DJ created by mixing two records together... and I was like, "far out this is what I want to do with my life". That experience led to me moving to Melbourne when I was 16 with a crate of records to fulfil my dream of DJing. It took me the best part of that first year in Melbourne to get the cash together to buy a set of Technics 1200 turntables and once I did, I practised mixing everyday for about a year and a half and since then I've played all around Melbourne every weekend.

Who, or what, would you say inspires / influences your performances the most?

Lots of things inspire me. It could be anything from a KILLER new track I got my hands on, an awesome vibe in the club when I start my set, seeing a DJ I really love, or listening to all types of music - from blues, rock, funk, soul, disco, house, techno - on the way to gigs.

Cats, or dogs? Why?

Dogs, because they're so loyal and cute and... yeh I love them.

You recently curated the "Midnight Mass" party at the Prince Bandroom and performed alongside a full vocal choir - tell us how this concept was born?

It started off with an idea I had of having a choir perform on the next track I wrote, and then doing a release party where the choir would perform during my set. Through the process of making my new track 'Here To Stay' I ended up setting up my own choir called 'Disco Faith Choir' which is the choir that performed at 'Midnight Mass'. I couldn't be happier with how the show came together - the great team that helped make it a success and the people that came to the show, the vibe was something else, and I can't wait for the next one.

What’s your favourite album of all time?

Prince Paul - Prince Among Thieves

Favourite gig you’ve played?

There's been so many favourites. I've had some really special sets at my weekly residency at Revolver on Saturday mornings... Survivor was a great club to play at, and djing with Disco Faith Choir was unreal.

What’s the best thing about being a DJ / producer?

Working with music everyday and feeling like you'll never know it all.

Disco Faith Recordings is your new label - tell us a bit about the concept?

Yes that's right. The idea behind the label is to set up a platform to release the music I'm making with Disco Faith Choir and grow it into a community of like-minded artists. The first release will be my track 'Here To Stay' featuring Disco Faith Choir and will be released later this year.
